Elements
In March 2022, I received a message from a young man named Michael, who shared that he had lived with his grandmother, Ruth, for ten years. One of her small daily joys was eating Altoids—she loved them and enjoyed them every day. Over time, Michael began saving the empty tins, thinking he might someday find a meaningful use for them. After his grandmother passed, he realized he could not keep them and asked if I would consider incorporating them into my artwork.
I had never used this kind of material, but I felt deeply honored by his request and moved by the love Michael held for his grandmother. His offering opened a door. Influenced by the box-like constructions of Louise Nevelson and the quiet, meditative grids of Agnes Martin, I began creating small, dimensional, self-contained sculptural worlds. In doing so, I consciously let go of external validation and began listening inward.
Using metallic niches and handmade substrates, each piece becomes its own atmosphere—an intimate environment with its own voice, rhythm, and energy. The work carries within it gestures of remembrance, gratitude, and quiet devotion.
Earth Elements and Luminous Elements are parallel explorations of matter and light—two languages speaking of presence, transformation, and resonance. In Earth Elements, stone, mineral, and metal evoke the grounding pulse of the natural world. In Luminous Elements, glass becomes the medium of illumination, capturing vibration, color, and the shifting quality of reflection. Each artwork becomes its own atmosphere—an intimate environment with its own voice, rhythm, and energy.
