The Crone (Baba Yaga)
The Crone (Baba Yaga), or Dark Mother, is the embodiment of the Wild Feminine archetype. Combined with my two other artworks (The Maiden and The Mother), the wise, powerful Crone represents part of the circle of life. Baba Yaga is the wild old woman, a mistress of wisdom and magic. The colors are dark and mysterious, associated with the waning or new moon, and the seasons of Autumn and Winter. The word Crone comes from the old word for “Crown,” suggesting that feminine wisdom emanates from the head like a halo. The Crone can represent a wise old woman, a grandmother, or a midwife. Her own childbearing days are past, and she is the wisdom keeper, seer, healer, whose knowledge is sought out to guide others during life’s hardships and transitions.

Created on a lightweight, yet sturdy, handmade substrate, this artwork features layers of iron metal coating that has been oxidized using a special acid to create a real rust patina. The patina has been sealed, to provide color stability over time. The circular design features a variety of stones and minerals, including a large specimen of Vanadinite, and smaller hand cut semiprecious minerals, native to the American Southwest. The “ halo” design around the circle comes from Cathedral Rock (Feminine Vortex) region, in Sedona, Arizona. The 3 small squares are handmade tesserae, carefully created using the same technique as the main substrate.
